Rehabilitation for the Postsurgical Orthopedic Patient: Module 1: The Upper Extremity and the Spine

BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to: 

1. List 3 types of connective tissue

2. Explain the effects of immobilization, remobilization and trauma on connective tissue

3. List 4 techniques for mobilization of connective tissue

4. Describe the surgical indications for: acromioplasty, anterior shoulder capsule reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, extensor brevis release and lateral epicondylectomy, reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament with ulnar nerve transposition, carpal tunnel release, lumbar microdiscectomy and lumbar spine fusion.

5. Describe the physical therapy guidelines for a postoperative patient for: acromioplasty, anterior shoulder capsule reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, extensor brevis release and lateral epicondylectomy, reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament with ulnar nerve transposition, carpal tunnel release, lumbar microdiscectomy and lumbar spine fusion.

6. Demonstrate knowledge of the different phases of rehabilitation for a post-operative patient for: acromioplasty, anterior shoulder capsule reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, extensor brevis release and lateral epicondylectomy, reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament with ulnar nerve transposition, carpal tunnel release, lumbar microdiscectomy and lumbar spine fusion.

7. Describe the rehabilitation goals for a postoperative patient for: acromioplasty, anterior shoulder capsule reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, extensor brevis release and lateral epicondylectomy, reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament with ulnar nerve transposition, carpal tunnel release, lumbar microdiscectomy and lumbar spine fusion.

8. Describe possible complicating factors in the rehabilitation process for a postoperative patient for: acromioplasty, anterior shoulder capsule reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, extensor brevis release and lateral epicondylectomy, reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament with ulnar nerve transposition, carpal tunnel release, lumbar microdiscectomy and lumbar spine fusion.

9. Create a home maintenance program for a postoperative patient for: acromioplasty, anterior shoulder capsule reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, extensor brevis release and lateral epicondylectomy, reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament with ulnar nerve transposition, carpal tunnel release, lumbar microdiscectomy and lumbar spine fusion.
