Rehabilitation for the Postsurgical Orthopedic Patient, 2nd Ed: Module 2: The Lower Extremity

BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to: 

1. List 5 categories of hip fractures

2. List the 4 stages of tendon healing

3. Describe the surgical indications for: total hip replacement, open reduction internal fixation of the hip, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic lateral retinaculum release of the knee, meniscectomy and meniscal repair, open reduction internal fixation of the patella, total knee replacement, lateral ankle ligament repair, open reduction internal fixation of the ankle, ankle arthroscopy and Achilles tendon repair.

4. Describe the physical therapy guidelines for a postoperative patient for: total hip replacement, open reduction internal fixation of the hip, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic lateral retinaculum release of the knee, meniscectomy and meniscal repair, open reduction internal fixation of the patella, total knee replacement, lateral ankle ligament repair, open reduction internal fixation of the ankle, ankle arthroscopy and Achilles tendon repair.

5. Demonstrate knowledge of the different phases of rehabilitation for a post-operative patient for: total hip replacement, open reduction internal fixation of the hip, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic lateral retinaculum release of the knee, meniscectomy and meniscal repair, open reduction internal fixation of the patella, total knee replacement, lateral ankle ligament repair, open reduction internal fixation of the ankle, ankle arthroscopy and Achilles tendon repair.

6. Describe the rehabilitation goals for a postoperative patient for: total hip replacement, open reduction internal fixation of the hip, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic lateral retinaculum release of the knee, meniscectomy and meniscal repair, open reduction internal fixation of the patella, total knee replacement, lateral ankle ligament repair, open reduction internal fixation of the ankle, ankle arthroscopy and Achilles tendon repair.

7. Describe possible complicating factors in the rehabilitation process for a postoperative patient for: total hip replacement, open reduction internal fixation of the hip, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic lateral retinaculum release of the knee, meniscectomy and meniscal repair, open reduction internal fixation of the patella, total knee replacement, lateral ankle ligament repair, open reduction internal fixation of the ankle, ankle arthroscopy and Achilles tendon repair.

8.
