Physical Therapies in Sport and Exercise: Module 3: The Role of Sport and Exercise Physical Therapists in Active Groups and Special Medical Considerations

Course Goals:    

This course is intended to instruct the student through self-paced study on the treatment principles, evaluation techniques and special considerations for working with children and adolescent athletes, female athletes, the elderly, and athletes with disabilities as well as to educate the student as to drug effects and medical issues with the athletic population.

 Student Objectives:               

At the end of this course the student will be able to:

  2. List the 4 youth sports with the highest risk for head and spine injuries
  3. List risk factors and clinical signs of a slipped capital femoral epiphysis
  4. List treatment considerations for traction apophysistis, patellofemoral pain and knee ligament injuries with children and adolescents
  5. List treatment considerations for ankle, shoulder and elbow injuries with children and adolescents.
  6. List benefits of exercise in older adults in relation to strength, balance, and endurance training
  7. Identify 5 contraindications to exercise in older adults

  32. Identify the 3 categories of asthma
  33. Identify strategies to manage exercise-induced asthma
  34. Identify the 3 types of seizures
  35. Identify sports that are relatively and absolutely contraindicated for people with epilepsy
  36. Identify guidelines that should be used is a patient is having a seizure and guidelines following seizure cessation
