Professional Ethics: A Guide for Rehabilitation Professionals: Module 2

Course Goals:      

This course is intended to instruct the student through self-paced study in the ethical standards applying to rehabilitation professionals including their respective Codes of Ethics and Guides for Professional Conduct. 

Student Objectives:               

At the end of this course the student will be able to:

1. Identify the legal importance of obtaining patient consent

2. Identify 5 items that should be disclosed to patients for them to be legally informed

3. Identify the 2 standards for adequacy of patient informed consent

4. Identify 2 exceptions to obtaining patient informed consent

5. Identify 2 basic requirements that must be met to be legally competent to testify as an expert witness

6. Identify the difference between mediation and arbitration

7. Identify the obligations for pro bono services, concerns to providing pro bono services and steps that can be taken to minimize potential malpractice liability exposure

8. Identify the difference between permissible and mandatory disclosure of patient confidential information

9. Identify potential risks and guidelines to accepting gifts from patients

10. Identify components of the Physical Therapy and Physical Therapy Assistant code of ethics

11. Identify components of the Physical Therapy and Physical Therapy Assistant Guide for Professional Conduct.
