Athletic and Sport Issues in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation: Module 6 Course Goals and Objectives: Course Goals: This course is intended to instruct the student through self-paced study on the foundation of treating an athlete through specific injuries including concussions, traumatic cervical injuries, maxillofacial injuries, and abdominal/thoracic injuries. Student Objectives: At the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Understand the activation of the brain after concussion. 2. Analyze the level of “on field” loss of consciousness. 3. Analyze four symptoms commonly reported after concussion. 4. Evaluate the time frame of a neurocognitive assessment. 5. Understand guidelines for returning to physical exertion after a concussion. 6. Evaluate the differences between males and females after concussion. 7. Evaluate four common neural injuries sustained by football players. 8. Evaluate the mechanism of injury for atlantoaxial dislocations. 9. Understand the spinal level most often injured in sports. 10. Evaluate the canal/vertebral body ratio as it relates to sporting activities. 11. Evaluate four pieces of gymnastic equipment and their relationship to cervical spine injuries. 12.
