Module 5: covers management of sports injury and illness including delayed-onset muscle soreness, medical conditions in sport, dermatologic considerations in athletics and protective equipment in sports

Module 6: covers management of sports injury and illness including sports related concussions, traumatic injuries to the cervical spine, maxillofacial injuries and abdominal and thoracic injuries.

Module 7: covers special populations and epidemiology including the female athlete, musculoskeletal dance medicine and science, the athlete with disabilities, and selected rehabilitation needs of the masters athlete.

Module 8: covers applied biomechanics of common weight training exercises, taping for athletics and rehabilitation and applied sports injury epidemiology

Course Goals and Objectives:

Course Goals: This course is intended to instruct the student through self-paced study on the foundations of environmental considerations for sports, the use of ergogenic aids in sports, sports drug testing, and the applied biomechanics of cycling.

Student Objectives:

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand the relationship of metabolic substrates and the heat that is produced during energy metabolism.

2. Evaluate the effect of exercise on the temperature of the brain.

3. Evaluate the length of time required for heat acclimatization.

4. Understand four skin conditions and their effect on inadequate perspiration.

5. Understand the effect of four minerals on heat cramps.

6. Evaluate the causes of hyponatremia.

7. Understand the increased metabolic demands of different walking surfaces.

8. Evaluate the loss of heat during cold-water immersion.

9. Analyze the types of hypothermia.

10. Understand chilblain.

11. Understand the relationship between altitude and maximum oxygen uptake.

12. Evaluate aerobic training and high altitude.

13. Understand the relationship of sodium and water to high altitude sickness.

14. Understand the difference between stable and unstable asthma.

15. Evaluate four specific tests for vocal cord dysfunction.

16. Understand the effects of over exposure to UV rays from the sun.

18. Evaluate normal muscle endurance adaptation during training.
