Course Goals and Objectives:

Course Goals: This course is intended to instruct the student, through self-paced study, on gait awareness, managing visual and visiospatial impairments to optimize function in patients who have had strokes and the impact of neurobehavioral deficits on activities of daily living.

Student Objectives:

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Break down the components of normal gait

2. Identify common gait deviations after a stroke

3. Outline the basics of gait retraining

4. Identify and differentiate between commonly used orthoses and assistive devices

5. Relate how visual information is processed by the central nervous system

6. Analyze how everyday living is affected if visual and spatial impairments are present

7. Differentiate between procedures to perform a visual screening after a brain injury

8. Identify at least five intervention strategies focused on decreasing activity limitations and participation restrictions for those living with visual and spatial impairments

9. Identify the relationship between neurobehavioral concepts and task performance

10. Apply the theory on which the Arnadottir OT-ADL Neurobehavioral Evaluation (A-ONE) is based as a structure for clinical observations of stroke patients

11. Outline conceptual and operational definitions for neurobehavioral impairments and disability

12. Apply clinical reasoning skills based on the A-ONE theory for hypothesis testing.

13. Relate the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, 2nd Edition, to the concepts used in the A-ONE

14. Identify examples of how strokes can cause different patterns of impairments affecting task performance
