Teach your patients the six BEST exercises to prevent osteoporosis. Funded by a NIH grant, the University of Arizona BEST Team of researchers identified the most effective exercises for preventing osteoporosis and improving bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Instruct your patients in training protocols, specific programming and motivational strategies that will be the BEST for optimal bone health. This course is offered in cooperation with Desert Southwest Fitness. 203 pages.

Course Length: 8.0 contact hours

The BEST Exercise Program for Osteoporosis Prevention

Course Goals and Objectives:

Course Goals:

This course is designed to give the student comprehensive overview of factors related to bone health with a specific emphasis on exercise for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The course is based on the University of Arizona Bone Estrogen Strength Training (BEST) study that demonstrated that weight-bearing and resistance exercise significantly improved bone mineral density at skeletal sites at risk for fracture in postmenopausal women.

Student Objectives:

At the end of this course the student will be able to:
1. Define osteoporosis

2. Identify the most common osteoporosis-related fracture sites

3. Recognize the prevalence of osteoporosis in the United States

4. Identify how bone tissue changes throughout the life cycle

5. Identify the one remolding cycle

6. Identify how medical therapy, nutrition, exercise and other lifestyle practices can help prevent and treat osteoporosis

7. Identify the primary and secondary risk factors for osteoporosis

8. Identify clinical definitions of osteopenia and osteoporosis

9. List methods for osteoporosis screening

10. Identify dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and ultrasonometry as devices for assessing bone mass, bone strength, and fracture risk

11. Identify clinical indications for bone densitometry

12. Identify the importance of physical activity for bone growth and maintenance of bone mass and density

13. Identify the goals of an exercise program for osteoporosis prevention

14. Identify the optimal mechanical stimuli for bone growth and mineralization and maintenance of bone mineral mass and density

15. Identify findings from observational studies of bone mineral density and interpret their meaning for prescription for osteoporosis prevention

16. Identify general findings from exercise training studies an interpret their meaning for exercise prescription for osteoporosis prevention

17. List exercise training principles and explain their application to program design for osteoporosis prevention.

18. Identify exercises to be avoided in older persons with osteoporosis and persons with low bone mineral density.

19. Identify useful exercises for stimulating increases in bone mineral density

20. Outline the training principles important for optimal bone health

21. Differentiate between the exercise protocols used in moderate training and heavy training

22. Identify the six BEST strengthening exercises for osteoporosis prevention

23. Identify stretching, abdominal strengthening, postural exercises, and cardio-weightbearing activities for optimal bone health and osteoporosis prevention.

24. Outline the strategies used to maintain high exercise adherence.
