This textbook is the leading reference on the shoulder and is now completely up-to-date with state-of-the-art rehabilitation and surgical techniques. It is an essential resource to the therapist, providing valuable information on functional anatomy, the mechanics of movement, neurologic, special, and surgical considerations and evaluation and treatment. This new edition provides new information, concepts, and evaluation of physical therapy and dysfunction based on the APTA Guide to Physical Therapy Practice, 2nd Ed and integrates these practice patterns with rehabilitation of the shoulder.

These courses are essential to therapists treating shoulder injuries in all rehabilitation settings!

Module 1 covers the mechanics of movement and evaluation including the guide to practice, functional anatomy and mechanics, throwing injuries and examinations and evaluation of the shoulder

Module 2 covers neurologic considerations including the interrelationship of the spine, rib cage and shoulder, neural tissue evaluation and treatment, sensory integration and neuromuscular control of the shoulder and evaluation and treatment of brachial plexus lesions.

Module 3 covers special considerations including impingement syndrome and impingement-related instability, frozen shoulder, evaluation and rehabilitation of rotator cuff pathologic conditions and rehabilitation and visceral pain referred to the shoulder

Module 4 covers treatment approaches including manual therapy, muscle length testing and electromyographic evidence for manual strength testing and exercises for the shoulder, rotator cuff repairs and surgical approaches to shoulder instabilities

Course Length: 8.0 contact hours

Physical Therapy of the Shoulder. 5th Ed: Module 2 Course Goals and Objectives: Course Goals: This course is intended to instruct the student through self-paced study on the interrelationship of the spine, rib cage, and shoulder, neural tissue evaluation and treatment, sensory integration and neuromuscular control of the shoulder and evaluation of treatment of brachial plexus lesions. Student Objectives: At the end of this course the student will be able to: 1. Identify the musculoskeletal, biomechanical, postural, occupational, and neurologic relationships between the spine, ribs and shoulder. 2. Identify the risk factors for cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) in the workplace. 3. Identify ergonomic solutions to cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) 4. Differentiate between Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV mechanoreceptors 5. Identify symptoms and signs for: omohyoid syndrome, levator scapulae syndrome, droopy shoulder syndrome and snapping scapula syndrome 6. Identify possible client symptoms resulting from nerve root involvement of C1-T1 7. Identify signs, symptoms and physician-ordered tests for disc disease, nerve root irritation and facet joint irritation in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. 8. Identify signs, symptoms and physician-ordered tests for rib injuries that refer pain and dysfunction to the shoulder 9. Identify lumbar spine and pelvic tissues capable of referring dysfunction to the shoulder 10. Identify 2 types of referred pain 11. Identify 6 signs of neural tissue involvement 12. Identify test techniques for neural tissue provocation from distal to proximal and from proximal to distal. 13. Identify manual therapy treatments of neural tissue 14. Identify feedback versus feedforward neuromuscular control (NMC) 15. Identify sensory integration and neuromuscular control of the shoulder in regards to somatosensory sensation, vision, and vestibular sensation 16. Identify 3 positioning tests for NMC of the upper extremity 17. Identify interventions to enhance neuromuscular control of the shoulder 18. Identify the role of video games and virtual reality in the rehabilitation setting 19. Identify the anatomy of the brachial plexus and nerve trunks 20. Identify 11 different lesions of the brachial plexus and their mechanism of injury. 21. Identify 4 musculoskeletal injuries that may have complications of brachial plexus injuries. 22. Identify 5 degrees of nerve injury, and the prognosis and relative time frame for recovery for each.
